The Legend of Mentidero - The Liar's Village
Imagine 16th Century Colonial Mexico.
The Hacienda Guadalupe lies between the markets of Guadalajara, Colima and the ports of Manzanillo and Barra de Navidad.
Here the charros, Mexican cowboys, would rest for the night, watering their stock on the plentiful pure water that cascades down from the mountains, and grazing them on the rich grass of the fertile valley floor.
They were always welcomed to feast on the bounty of this tierra dulce.
After a fine meal and a blessing from the Padre, the charros would excuse themselves to a salon reserved for card
games
and stories of love and life.
The drink of the evening, as always, wasvino de maguey. What we know today as tequila.
As the night grew long, their tales grew longer. So fantastic were these stories, enriched by the vino, that the Hacienda Guadalupe became known as
El Mentidero, Liars Village.
The name has persisted to this day.
And so has the lubricant that oiled the tongues of the charros. It is still produced
in this idyllic valley by the family, Cisneros
Vargas, who date back to those Colonial days.
Distiladora Mentidero is the fabrica that produces what has been called,
“The best Tequila a ever!”
Casta Negra is 100% Agave Tequila. And that, my friend, is no lie.
